Removing Group Members

Removing someone from a group requires that they have no outstanding debts. This article explains the process and how to handle common issues that block removal.

How to Remove a Group Member

  1. Open the group

  2. Go to Settings or the Members tab

  3. Find the member you want to remove

  4. Click Remove or the trash icon

  5. Confirm the removal

"This Member Has Unpaid Debts"

This is the most common blocker when trying to remove someone. Even if the sidebar shows them as "Settled," they may still have debts in the original calculation.

Why This Happens

If your group uses Simplified Debts, the balances shown are optimized to reduce the number of payments. A member might appear settled in the simplified view but still have outstanding debts in the original debt structure.

How to Fix It

Step 1: Check for hidden debts

  1. Go to group Settings

  2. Turn off Simplify Debts temporarily

  3. Look at the member's balance—you'll now see their original debts

Step 2: Settle the original debts

  1. Create a payment to clear the member's actual balance

  2. Verify their balance is now $0 in the original view

Step 3: Remove the member

  1. With debts cleared, try removing them again

  2. Once removed, you can re-enable Simplified Debts if desired

Removing an Unclaimed Member

If someone was added to the group but never claimed their account (they never signed up or joined):

  1. Go to the member list

  2. Find the unclaimed member (usually shows without a profile picture)

  3. Click Remove

Note: Unclaimed members can be removed even with debts, but this will delete their balance history from the group. Consider settling first if you need to track who owed what.

Removing Someone Who Claimed the Wrong Slot

If a person accidentally claimed another member's spot when joining:

  1. Remove the incorrectly connected member

  2. Their account will be disconnected from that slot

  3. The original member can now claim their correct spot

  4. Send a new invite link if needed

Can I Remove Myself?

You can leave a group if:

  • You have no outstanding debts

  • You're not the only group creator/admin

If you're the creator, transfer ownership first or ensure another member has admin rights.

What Happens When Someone Is Removed?

  • Their connection to the group is severed

  • They can no longer see or add expenses

  • Expenses they were part of remain in the group

  • Their shares in those expenses stay as historical data

Note: Removing someone does not delete their past expense history—it only removes their access going forward.

Alternative: Create a New Group

If removal is too complicated (many intertwined debts, simplified debts causing issues), consider:

  1. Settling up everyone in the current group

  2. Creating a new group without the problematic member

  3. Continuing fresh

This is often simpler than trying to untangle complex debt relationships.

Common Questions

Q: Can I remove someone and keep them settled? You must settle first, then remove. The system requires $0 balance before removal.

Q: They paid me directly—how do I reflect that? Record a payment in SplitMyExpenses. Go to Settle Up and log the amount they paid you. This will clear their balance.

Q: I accidentally removed the wrong person. Can I undo? There's no undo, but you can invite them back to the group. Their previous balance won't be restored automatically—you may need to adjust expenses.
